Oboroguruma is a mysterious yokai that appears as an abandoned ox-drawn cart, drifting silently through the night. In Japanese folklore, it is often said to be possessed by restless or vengeful spirits, its presence marked by eerie sounds that echo through the darkness.
Unlike monstrous creatures of sheer size, Oboroguruma embodies a quieter, more intimate kind of fear—the fear of something approaching without warning, something that should not be alive, yet moves on its own.
In this illustration, the cart has transformed into a nightmarish entity. Its wooden frame twists into a grotesque face, its wheel becomes a gaping mouth, and skeletal hands grip the structure from within.

朧車（おぼろぐるま） ― 彷徨う牛車の妖怪
歩くものばかりが、恐怖ではない。
朧車は、日本の伝承に登場する妖怪で、主を失った牛車がひとりでに夜の闇を漂う存在とされています。そこには怨念や未練を残した霊が宿り、不気味な音や声を響かせるとも言われています。
巨大な怪物とは異なり、朧車がもたらす恐怖は「静かな接近」です。本来動くはずのないものが、気づかぬうちに近づいてくる――その違和感こそが、この妖怪の本質です。
本作品では、牛車そのものが異形へと変貌しています。木製の構造は歪み、顔のような形を成し、車輪は大きく開いた口のように見えます。内部からは無数の手が伸び、存在の異様さを際立たせています。
かつてそれを引いていた牛の姿はなく、見えない力によって動かされているかのようです。
周囲を覆う煙や雲の流れは、現実と異界の境界を曖昧にし、静寂の中に潜む恐怖を強調しています。
