The Watching Eyes Within the Walls

Mokumokuren is a mysterious yokai said to appear in old, abandoned houses, where countless eyes emerge from torn paper screens and cracked walls. These eyes do not move, yet they seem to follow every motion, creating an overwhelming sense of being watched.

In this interpretation, the entire building itself has become the yokai. Walls, doors, and surfaces are covered with silent, unblinking eyes, transforming what was once a place of shelter into a living presence. The structure no longer feels empty — it feels aware.

Each eye is slightly different. Some are wide open, others half-closed, some almost seem to smile, while others appear hollow and lifeless. Together, they create an unsettling atmosphere that surrounds the viewer from every direction.

Small human figures at the entrance emphasize the scale of the structure, highlighting the overwhelming presence of the building. It is not just a location — it is something that observes, something that remembers.

Unlike aggressive yokai, Mokumokuren does not attack. Its power lies in awareness. The feeling of being constantly seen, with no escape and no privacy, creates a deep and lasting sense of unease.

For coloring, the repetition of eyes offers a unique and engaging experience. Different colors can be applied to each eye, or grouped into patterns to create rhythm and contrast.

The wooden structure can be colored in warm browns or aged tones, while subtle variations in the eyes can bring life to the entire composition. Adding slight shadows around each eye can enhance depth and strengthen the eerie atmosphere.

This piece captures a quiet but powerful fear — the realization that even empty spaces may be watching.

目目連（もくもくれん）

目目連は、古く傷んだ家屋の障子や壁に 無数の目が現れるとされる妖怪です。 その目は動かないにもかかわらず、 まるでこちらを見続けているかのような 強い視線を感じさせます。

この作品では、建物そのものが妖怪となり、 壁や柱、あらゆる場所に目が現れています。 かつては人が暮らしていた場所が、 今では意志を持つ存在のように感じられます。

目の表情はそれぞれ異なり、 大きく見開かれたもの、 半分閉じたもの、 どこか笑っているようなものまで存在します。 それらが重なり合うことで、 空間全体が見られているような不安を生み出しています。

入口に立つ人物との対比により、 建物の巨大さと異質さが強調されています。 それは単なる建物ではなく、 何かが宿る存在として描かれています。

目目連は直接襲いかかる妖怪ではありません。 その恐怖は「見られている」という感覚そのものです。 どこにいても視線から逃れられないという感覚が、 深い不安を生み出します。

塗りでは、無数の目を活かして 色のバリエーションを楽しむことができます。 目ごとに色を変えたり、 グラデーションをつけることで 作品にリズムが生まれます。

建物は木材の質感を意識して 茶系やくすんだ色合いでまとめると、 全体の雰囲気が引き締まります。 目の周囲に軽く影をつけると、 立体感と不気味さがより強調されます。

この作品は、 誰にも見られていないはずの場所でさえ 視線から逃れられないという、 静かで根深い恐怖を描いた一枚です。
