A quiet presence rises from the water—beautiful, sorrowful, and deeply unsettling.

Nure-onna is a mysterious yokai said to appear near rivers, coastlines, and mist-covered waters. With the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a serpent, she waits silently at the edge of the water, watching those who wander too close.

In this illustration, she emerges from the surface, her soaked hair clinging to her body like living strands. Water drips endlessly from her form, as if she has just risen from the depths. The stillness of the scene suggests something ancient, something that has been waiting beneath the water for a very long time.

Cradled in her arms is a small bundle, often mistaken for a child. She may ask passersby to hold it, her voice calm and distant. Yet once accepted, the bundle grows unbearably heavy—revealing its true nature and sealing the fate of the one who carries it.

Some legends say she feeds on her victims. Others say she simply drags them into the water, where they vanish without a trace. The truth remains uncertain, hidden beneath the surface.

The composition emphasizes stillness and tension. Gentle ripples spread across the water, while the distant landscape fades into quiet emptiness. Intricate linework in the hair, clothing, and scales provides detailed coloring areas, while open spaces in the water and background maintain balance and ease of coloring.

濡女は、川や海辺、霧の立ち込める水辺に現れるとされる妖怪で、上半身は女性、下半身は蛇の姿をしています。

静かに水面から現れるその姿はどこか哀しげでありながら、不気味な違和感を漂わせています。濡れた長い髪は身体に絡みつくように垂れ、水滴が途切れることなく落ち続ける様子が、水の底から来た存在であることを感じさせます。

彼女はしばしば「赤子のような包み」を抱え、人に持つよう頼むとされています。しかしそれを受け取った瞬間、その重さは異常なものへと変わり、逃げることはできなくなります。

伝承によっては、そのまま命を奪われるとも、水中へ引き込まれるとも言われていますが、詳しい結末は語られず、恐怖は水の中へと沈んでいきます。

この作品では、水面の静けさと人物の存在感の対比によって、不穏な空気を演出しています。遠景はあえてシンプルにすることで孤立感を強め、視線を中心の存在へと引き寄せます。
