Izanami – The Goddess Who Rules the Land of the Dead

Izanami is one of the most important deities in Japanese mythology. Together with the god Izanagi, she is known as a creator of the Japanese islands and many of the early gods.

However, her story takes a tragic turn.

After giving birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi, Izanami lost her life and descended into Yomi, the land of the dead. From that moment on, she became a powerful and mysterious ruler of the underworld. When Izanagi attempted to bring her back to the world of the living, he discovered that she had already transformed into a being of the realm beyond life.
