The Dragon Princess of the Sea

Toyotama-hime is one of the most mysterious female figures in Japanese mythology.
She is known as the daughter of the sea god Watatsumi, the ruler of the vast ocean and the hidden Dragon Palace beneath the waves.

According to ancient legends recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Toyotama-hime lived in the magnificent underwater palace known as Ryūgū-jō, a realm filled with pearls, coral, and the quiet glow of the deep sea. It was here that she met the hero Hoori, also known as Yamasachihiko.

Their meeting began when Hoori lost his brother’s sacred fishing hook and descended into the ocean in search of it. In the Dragon Palace, he encountered Toyotama-hime, and the two soon fell in love. Hoori remained in the underwater realm for several years before eventually returning to the human world with Toyotama-hime.

However, Toyotama-hime was not entirely human.

When the time came for her to give birth, she asked Hoori not to watch her during the process. Unable to resist his curiosity, Hoori looked anyway and discovered her true form — a sacred sea creature often described as a dragon or wani-like being. Ashamed that her true nature had been revealed, Toyotama-hime returned to the sea, leaving their child behind.

This powerful story reflects an important theme in Japanese mythology: the boundary between the human world and the divine world of nature.

豊玉姫（とよたまひめ）

海に生きる龍の姫神

豊玉姫は、日本神話に登場する神秘的な海の女神の一柱です。
彼女は海神 綿津見（わたつみ） の娘とされ、海の底にある龍宮に住む姫として語り継がれています。

『古事記』や『日本書紀』によれば、豊玉姫は海の底にある壮麗な宮殿 龍宮城 に住んでいました。そこは真珠や珊瑚、静かな海の光に包まれた神秘的な世界です。

ある時、山幸彦として知られる 火遠理命（ほおりのみこと） が、兄の釣り針を探すため海の世界へと降り立ちます。龍宮城で豊玉姫と出会った彼は、そのまま海の宮殿で暮らすことになり、二人は夫婦となりました。

しかし豊玉姫は、人の姿をしていても本来は人間ではありませんでした。

出産の際、彼女は「決して姿を見ないでほしい」と火遠理命に告げます。ところが好奇心に負けた彼はその約束を破ってしまいます。するとそこには、龍や海の神獣の姿ともいわれる豊玉姫の本来の姿がありました。

その姿を見られてしまった豊玉姫は恥じて海へ帰り、二人は再び共に暮らすことはありませんでした。

この物語は、日本神話において重要なテーマである
人の世界と神の世界の境界 を象徴する伝承でもあります。
