The Mourning Mother Spirit

Not all spirits are born from anger. Some are shaped by love that could not be fulfilled.

Ubume is a sorrowful presence said to appear on rainy nights, a mother bound to the world by grief for the child she could not protect.

She is often seen holding a newborn, gently calling out to passing travelers, asking them to take the child for just a moment.

At first, the request seems harmless. A quiet plea, filled with desperation and care.

But once the child is accepted, its weight begins to change.

Heavier. Colder. Something that should not be held for long.

And before you realize it, Ubume is gone— leaving you alone with what she could not release.

In this illustration, her hand reaches forward, caught between a request and a warning.

Her expression carries both beauty and sorrow, yet something beneath it refuses to fade.

She does not seek to harm. She only cannot let go.

産女（うぶめ）

すべての霊が怒りから生まれるわけではありません。 中には、叶わなかった想いから生まれる存在もあります。

産女は、守ることのできなかった子への想いに縛られ、 この世に留まり続ける母の霊とされています。 雨の夜、赤子を抱いて現れると言われています。

彼女は通りかかる者に声をかけ、 「少しだけ抱いてほしい」と静かに頼みます。

その願いは、あまりにも自然で、 拒む理由のないものに見えます。

しかし、赤子を受け取った瞬間から、 その重さは変わり始めます。

次第に重く、冷たく—— 長く抱えていてはいけないものへと変わっていきます。

そして気づいた時には、 産女の姿は消え、 その存在だけが残されています。

このイラストでは、差し出された手の一瞬を捉え、 願いと警告が同時に存在する瞬間を表現しています。

その表情には美しさと哀しみが宿りながら、 どこか消えない何かが残っています。

彼女は害を与えようとしているわけではありません。 ただ、手放すことができないだけなのです。
