Vengeful Spirits of the Drowned Sea

Funayurei are the restless spirits of those who perished at sea, said to appear on dark waters in ghostly ships. Driven by resentment and unresolved sorrow, they drift endlessly, seeking to pull the living into the depths.

In this illustration, a decaying ship rises from violent waves, its form worn and unstable, as if sustained by unseen forces. The vessel emerges toward the viewer, creating a sense of unavoidable confrontation.

Ghostly figures crowd the deck, their hollow eyes and lifeless expressions reaching outward in silence. Their movements are slow yet relentless, creating a suffocating atmosphere of dread.

Unlike colossal creatures, the fear of Funayurei comes from their presence itself. They do not overpower through size, but through inevitability—once seen, there is no escape.

For coloring, the spirits can be rendered in pale tones such as light gray, bluish white, or desaturated colors to create a ghostly appearance. The ship can be colored in aged wood tones, such as dark brown or gray, suggesting decay and long exposure to the sea.

船幽霊（ふなゆうれい）

船幽霊は、海で命を落とした者たちの怨念が形となった存在で、 暗い海に現れ、船ごと現世に近づいてくるとされる妖怪です。 未練や悲しみを抱えたまま漂い続け、 生きている者を海の底へ引き込もうとします。

このイラストでは、朽ちた船が荒れた海の中から姿を現し、 まるで見えない力に押し上げられるように前方へ迫ってきます。 逃げ場のない圧迫感が強く表現されています。

船上には無数の幽霊が立ち、 虚ろな目と無表情のまま手を伸ばしています。 その動きは激しくはないものの、 確実に迫ってくるような不気味さがあります。

巨大な怪物のような直接的な力ではなく、 逃れられない存在としての恐怖が強調されており、 見た者に深い不安を与える構図となっています。
