The Eight-Headed Serpent of Japanese Myth

Yamata no Orochi is one of the most famous creatures in Japanese mythology. Described as a colossal serpent with eight heads and eight tails, its massive body was said to stretch across valleys and mountains. The creature was feared by all who lived nearby, as it demanded a young maiden as a sacrifice every year.

The legend tells that the storm god Susanoo-no-Mikoto encountered a grieving family whose daughters had been devoured by the serpent one by one. Only the youngest daughter remained. Susanoo vowed to defeat the monster and devised a clever plan rather than confronting it directly.

He prepared strong sake and placed it into eight large barrels, one for each head of the serpent. Drawn by the scent, Yamata no Orochi drank deeply from every barrel and soon fell into a drunken sleep. At that moment, Susanoo drew his sword and struck down the beast.

As he cut through the serpent’s massive body, he discovered a sacred blade hidden within its tail. This sword would later become known as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan.

In this illustration, the moment just before the decisive battle is captured. The enormous serpent rises above the storm-filled sky, its many heads roaring with terrifying power. Below it stands Susanoo, alone yet fearless, holding his sword as lightning flashes across the heavens.

This dramatic scene represents one of the greatest battles in Japanese mythology — a confrontation between divine courage and overwhelming chaos.

八岐大蛇

日本神話に現れる八つの頭を持つ大蛇

八岐大蛇（やまたのおろち）は、日本神話の中でも特に有名な怪物の一つです。八つの頭と八つの尾を持つ巨大な蛇で、その体は山や谷をまたぐほどの大きさだったと伝えられています。毎年若い娘を生け贄として食らう恐ろしい存在として、人々に恐れられていました。

ある時、嵐の神 須佐之男命（スサノオノミコト） が、大蛇に娘たちを奪われた老夫婦と出会います。残された娘はただ一人。スサノオはこの怪物を討つことを決意しました。

しかし、スサノオは力任せに戦うのではなく、知恵を使った作戦を考えます。強い酒を八つの大きな酒樽に用意し、大蛇の前に置いたのです。香りに引き寄せられた八岐大蛇は、八つの頭それぞれで酒を飲み干し、やがて酔いつぶれて眠り込みました。

その瞬間、スサノオは剣を抜き、大蛇を討ち倒します。そしてその尾を切り裂いた時、中から現れたのが神聖な剣でした。この剣は後に 草薙剣（くさなぎのつるぎ） と呼ばれ、日本の三種の神器の一つとなります。

この作品では、決戦直前の緊張感あふれる瞬間を描いています。嵐の空の下、巨大な八つの頭を持つ大蛇がうねりながら咆哮し、その前にスサノオが剣を構えて立ち向かいます。

神と怪物が対峙するこの場面は、日本神話を代表する壮大な戦いの瞬間を象徴しています。
