Omagatoki, meaning “the hour of meeting demons,” refers to the fleeting time at dusk when daylight fades and night begins. In Japanese tradition, it is believed that during this moment, the boundary between the human world and the spirit world becomes thin.

Unlike yokai with distinct shapes, Omagatoki is not a creature. It is a state—an atmosphere where the familiar begins to feel uncertain. Shadows stretch, colors fade, and the clarity of the day dissolves into something ambiguous.

In this quiet transition, shapes shift and meanings blur. What was once ordinary may appear altered, and the mind begins to sense presences that cannot be seen. It is not a sudden terror, but a subtle, creeping unease.

This illustration captures that moment. A lone figure walks beneath a torii gate, while a hidden form stretches within the shadow—suggesting that something unseen is already close, waiting in the threshold between worlds.

Inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics and tattoo composition, the clean line art creates a calm yet unsettling space, inviting the viewer to explore light, shadow, and perception through coloring.

Omagatoki is not a place, nor a being— it is the moment when reality begins to shift.

逢魔が時 ― 境界が揺らぐ刻

恐怖は、必ずしも形を持つとは限らない。

逢魔が時とは、日が沈み、昼と夜が入れ替わるわずかな時間を指します。「魔に逢う刻」とも言われ、この時間には人の世界と異界との境界が曖昧になると信じられてきました。

明確な姿を持つ妖怪とは異なり、逢魔が時は「存在」ではなく「状態」です。光が弱まり、影が伸び、見慣れた風景が少しずつ違って見え始めるその瞬間。世界の輪郭がぼやけていきます。

その静かな変化の中で、形や意味は揺らぎます。何気ないものが異質に感じられ、見えない何かの気配が近づいてくるような感覚が生まれます。それは突然の恐怖ではなく、じわりと忍び寄る不安です。

本作品では、鳥居の下を歩く一人の人物と、その影の中に潜む異形の存在を描いています。境界の向こう側に何かがあるのか、それともすでにこちら側にいるのか――その曖昧さが表現されています。

和の美意識や和彫りの構成を取り入れた線画は、静けさと不穏さを併せ持ち、光と影の表現を楽しむことができる仕上がりになっています。

逢魔が時とは、場所でも存在でもない。 それは、世界が揺らぎ始める瞬間です。
