Menreiki is a mysterious yokai said to be composed of numerous masks, each bearing a different expression—laughter, sorrow, anger, or emptiness. These faces drift together, forming a single presence without a fixed body or identity.

Unlike creatures that rely on strength or violence, Menreiki represents emotion itself. Each mask is a fragment of human feeling, separated from the person who once held it.

When these expressions gather, they begin to lose their meaning. A smile no longer comforts, a cry no longer signals pain—everything becomes uncertain, unfamiliar, and deeply unsettling.

In this illustration, the masks swirl together in a flowing motion, surrounding the serpentine form below. The composition creates a sense of instability, where no single face can be trusted as real.

Inspired by traditional Japanese tattoo design and Ukiyo-e composition, the flowing lines guide the eye through the piece while maintaining clear, open areas for coloring.

Menreiki does not attack— it overwhelms.

面霊気 ― 仮面の集合体の妖怪

多くの顔がありながら、ひとつの正体を持たない存在。

面霊気は、さまざまな表情を持つ仮面が集まって形成された妖怪とされています。笑い、悲しみ、怒り、無表情——それぞれ異なる感情を持つ顔が漂いながら、一つの存在としてまとまっていますが、そこに確かな「本体」はありません。

力で襲う妖怪とは異なり、面霊気は感情そのものを体現しています。それぞれの仮面は、かつて人が持っていた感情の断片であり、それが切り離されて存在しています。

しかし、それらが集まることで意味は曖昧になります。笑顔は安心を与えず、涙は悲しみを示さない。すべてが混ざり合い、何が本当なのか分からなくなっていきます。

本作品では、仮面が渦を巻くように流れ、下にある蛇の体を囲むように配置されています。どの顔が本物なのか判断できない、不安定で不気味な空気を表現しています。

和彫りや浮世絵の構図を取り入れた流れる線は、視線を自然に導きながら、塗りやすい余白も確保しています。

面霊気は襲う存在ではなく、感情によって圧倒する存在です。
