Myth & Meaning

Tsuchigumo is a monstrous spider said to dwell deep beneath the earth, within caves, hollow mountains, and the tangled roots of ancient forests.

It rarely appears in the open. Instead, its presence is felt first— a quiet heaviness, an unseen awareness.

When prey approaches, thin threads descend silently from above, almost invisible until they cling.

By the time the victim looks up, the Tsuchigumo is already there.

Watching. Waiting. Unmoving.

In some legends, the name “Tsuchigumo” was also used for those who resisted authority. Over time, that name became something feared— something no longer human.

Because of this, Tsuchigumo exists both as a creature of the underworld and as a shadow of something that once was.

そこには、何かが潜んでいます。

見えず、 音もなく、 ただ、存在しているもの。

土蜘蛛は、 地の下に棲む妖怪です。

伝承と意味

土蜘蛛は、洞窟や山の内部、 古い森の根の奥など、 地中深くに棲む巨大な蜘蛛の妖怪とされています。

ほとんど姿を現すことはなく、 まず感じるのは「気配」。

静かな圧迫感や、 見られているような感覚。

やがて、細い糸が上から垂れ、 気づいた時にはすでに絡め取られています。

見上げたその瞬間、 そこにいるのです。

動かず、 ただ見つめる存在として。

また「土蜘蛛」という名は、 かつて権力に従わなかった人々を指す言葉でもありました。

やがてその名は、 人ならざる存在へと変わり、 恐れの対象となっていきます。

そのため土蜘蛛は、 単なる怪物ではなく、 かつて人であった影を持つ存在とも言えます。
