The Witch Who Burned Three Times

In Norse mythology, Gullveig is one of the most enigmatic and unsettling figures described in the ancient poem Völuspá. She is portrayed as a mysterious woman connected to gold and the powerful magical practice known as Seidr, a form of sorcery associated with fate, desire, and hidden knowledge.

When Gullveig arrived among the gods, her presence caused deep unease. The Aesir feared the influence of her magic and believed that her power could corrupt the divine order. In response, the gods captured her and attempted to destroy her.

They burned her alive.

But the story does not end there.

Even after being cast into the flames, Gullveig did not die.
The gods burned her again.
And then once more.

Three times she was burned, and three times she returned.

Each time her body was reduced to ashes, she rose again from the fire. Her unnatural survival shocked the gods and revealed that she possessed a power far beyond what they had imagined. Many interpretations suggest that Gullveig later became Heidr, a wandering sorceress who spread the practice of Seidr throughout the world. Her persecution is also believed to have triggered the first great war between the Aesir and the Vanir, one of the central conflicts in Norse mythology.

多くの研究では、グルヴェイグは後に ヘイズル（Heidr） という名の魔女となり、セイズ魔術を世界へ広めた存在だと考えられています。また、この事件は アース神族とヴァン神族の最初の戦争 のきっかけになったとも伝えられています。
