The Eternal Realm Between Worlds

Tokoyo is not a place that can be clearly defined, nor a world that belongs to the living or the dead. It exists somewhere between realms — a boundary where meaning dissolves and all things begin to merge.

In Japanese mythology, Tokoyo is often described as an eternal land, a distant and unreachable realm where time flows differently, or does not flow at all. It is neither heaven nor the underworld, but something that exists beyond such distinctions.

In this illustration, the world itself appears to lose its structure. The sea rises like mountains, the sky folds into waves, and the horizon becomes unclear. Nothing is fixed, and everything seems to shift between states.

At the center stands a lone human figure, facing a torii gate that marks the threshold between the known and the unknown. The path ahead is uncertain — whether it leads forward, backward, or nowhere at all is left unanswered.

Unlike scenes of fear or conflict, this composition emphasizes stillness. There is no clear danger, yet there is no comfort either. Instead, it presents a quiet sense of vastness and ambiguity.

The surrounding waves and clouds can be colored in flowing gradients or subtle contrasts, allowing the artist to explore movement without losing clarity. The torii gate may be highlighted with stronger tones, creating a focal point within the shifting world.

The human figure can be kept simple, reinforcing the contrast between the smallness of human existence and the overwhelming scale of the unknown.

This piece represents a space beyond definition — a place where boundaries fade, where time loses meaning, and where the world itself becomes something unknowable.

常世（とこよ）

常世とは、明確に定義することのできない世界であり、 生者の世界でも死者の世界でもありません。 それは境界の中間に存在し、 あらゆる意味や区別が溶けていく場所とされています。

日本の神話において常世は、 永遠の地や遥か彼方の世界として語られ、 時間の流れさえ曖昧な場所とされています。 それは天でも地獄でもなく、 そのどちらにも属さない領域です。

この作品では、世界そのものが形を失いかけています。 海は山のように盛り上がり、 空は波のように揺らぎ、 地平線はどこまでも曖昧に溶けていきます。 すべてが流動し、固定されたものは存在しません。

中央にはひとりの人物が立ち、 鳥居の向こう側を見つめています。 そこは既知と未知の境界であり、 進むのか、戻るのか、その答えは示されていません。

恐怖や戦いの場面とは異なり、 この構図は静けさを強調しています。 危険は見えないものの、 安心もまた存在しません。 ただ広がるのは、 言葉にできない曖昧さと余白です。

波や雲は流れを意識したグラデーションや 柔らかなコントラストで彩ることで、 動きと奥行きを表現することができます。 鳥居はやや強い色で仕上げることで、 視線を引き寄せるポイントになります。

人物はシンプルに仕上げることで、 人の存在の小ささと、 世界の広がりとの対比がより強調されます。

この作品は、 定義できない場所を描いた一枚です。 境界が消え、 時間の意味が薄れ、 世界そのものがわからなくなっていく— そんな感覚を表現しています。
