Indra and the Vajra Thunderbolt – A Storm God with a Golden Weapon

This second artwork from Anime Gods and Mythic Relics Coloring Book features Indra and the Vajra, a thunderbolt weapon connected with storm, power, and divine authority.
After the calm circular composition of Vishnu and the Sudarshana Chakra, this page feels much sharper. The Vajra comes forward like a bolt of lightning, and the whole pose has a strong “storm is about to break” feeling. I think that makes it a good second piece in the book because the mood changes immediately.
Who Is Indra?
Indra is a powerful deity from Hindu tradition, often associated with storms, rain, thunder, battle, and kingship. He is commonly known as a ruler of the heavens and a warrior figure who brings force, movement, and energy into mythological stories.
The Vajra is one of his most important symbols. It can be understood as a thunderbolt, a divine weapon, and a sign of unbreakable power. Visually, it is a very satisfying object for a coloring page because it can be treated as metal, lightning, crystal, or sacred energy.
For this artwork, I wanted the Vajra to feel almost too bright to hold. The character is calm and focused, but the weapon itself is loud. That contrast is the fun part.
Looking at the Artwork
The first thing that stands out is the large weapon in the foreground. It has sharp edges, layered shapes, and a central jewel-like detail, so it gives you a clear focal point right away.
The second important part is the background lightning. These jagged lines can be colored very simply, but they change the whole atmosphere of the page. Pale blue lightning will make the scene feel magical and clean. Yellow-white lightning will feel hotter and more divine. Purple lightning can push it into a darker fantasy mood.
I also like the movement in the hair and fabric. It looks as if the wind is coming from the storm itself. When coloring, this is a good place to use directional shading instead of flat color everywhere.
Main Symbols in This Page
- Vajra Thunderbolt: divine power, storm energy, strength, and clarity
- Lightning: sudden force, awakening, and heavenly authority
- Clouds: rain, atmosphere, and the presence of a storm god
- Gold ornaments: royalty, sacred status, and celestial power
- Blue jewels: sky, thunder, and cold electric light
Coloring Plan
For this page, I would choose the lightning color first. It sounds like a small decision, but it affects everything else.
If the lightning is blue, the gold Vajra will stand out beautifully. If the lightning is yellow, the whole page becomes warmer and more intense. If the lightning is purple, the clouds can become darker and more dramatic.
The Vajra itself is probably the best place to use strong gold. Try saving the brightest yellow or white for the center jewel and the edges of the weapon. That little trick makes the weapon look like it is catching light from the storm.
A Palette I Would Try
- Main colors: white, deep blue, storm gray, metallic gold
- Accent colors: sapphire blue, electric cyan, pale yellow
- Shadow colors: violet gray, navy, cool brown
- Glow colors: white, lemon yellow, light blue
If you want a heroic anime look, keep the clothing mostly white with blue and gold trim. If you want a darker storm-god feeling, make the clouds and cloak much deeper, then let the lightning cut through the page.
Small Coloring Tip

The weapon has many sharp parts, so it can become visually heavy if every section is colored the same gold.
One easy way to avoid that is to alternate slightly:
- Outer edges: bright yellow gold
- Inner panels: darker ochre or bronze
- Jewel areas: blue, white, or turquoise
- Small highlights: left white or finished with gel pen
This makes the Vajra easier to read, especially because it is so large in the foreground.
What I Would Be Careful With
The clouds and lightning can easily become too busy. I would not color every cloud with heavy dark shading. Leaving some cloud areas pale gives the lightning room to breathe.
The face is also important. Since the weapon is huge, the character’s expression can get overlooked. A little extra care around the eyes, hair shadows, and crown will help keep the figure from disappearing behind the Vajra.
My Favorite Part of This Page
My favorite part is the hand holding the weapon. It gives the artwork a strong sense of distance because the Vajra is pushed toward the viewer. It is a simple composition idea, but it makes the page feel more active than a normal standing portrait.
This is one of those pages where the coloring can go either way: clean and bright like a divine hero, or dark and electric like a storm scene. Both versions would fit Indra well.
Final Note
Indra and the Vajra Thunderbolt is a page for bold colors, metallic effects, and dramatic light. It has more movement and force than the first artwork, so it is a nice place to try stronger contrast.
Start with the lightning, give the Vajra its own glow, and let the clouds support the storm instead of covering everything. The page will feel much more powerful if the light has a clear path through it.
Step into the world of mythology..
